Indoor Policy Juniors
Ensure that the processes around the summer Indoor competition are clear to all players, parents and officials. Indoor processes do vary in some cases from the outdoor processes so this policy aims to provide one policy covering the Waverley indoor junior teams across all aspects of the competition.
Related – This includes, but is not limited to, a parent, guardian, and other family member.
Head Selector – The selector who is ultimately responsible for running the selection process. This includes, but is not limited to, the selection structure, managing selectors, liaising with the committee.
This policy concerns only the indoor teams. The policy covers:
a) The selection process for the Waverley Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 indoor competition teams,
b) The process for considering requests to play out of age for the Waverley Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 indoor competition teams,
c) The process for allowing players from other clubs to play for Waverley in an indoor team and the procedure for allowing (assuming Hockey Victoria rules allow) players to double up on a permanent basis for the Waverley Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 indoor competition teams.
4) INDOOR SELECTION PROCEDURE (SHIELD)
a) The selection should take place over at least one session, where time and access to indoor facilities permits then two sessions should be run. Exception to this would be when there are not sufficient numbers nominating to play at Shield level to require a trial.
b) Each player trialling for shield teams will receive a number.
c) Players will be asked to refrain from wearing State or other Representative team clothing (eg Hotshots).
d) Selectors should conduct a mixture of drills and games as part of the selection process.
e) At the end of the trial, the selectors must rank all of the players in order of skill. This ranking may be used to determine the team allocation, depending on how many players each team will be taking.
i) Each team will be assessed independently and in order from the top – down.
ii) If Selectors are also assigning players to Pennant and District teams the process will be repeated, firstly for Pennant and finally for District (where relevant Mixed teams first, then Girls) until all players are assigned.
f) Where there is disagreement amongst the ranking of the players, the Head Selector must put the issue to a vote amongst selectors. In the event of a tie, the Head Selector’s view will be final.
g) Any player involved in the selection process may, in writing, request feedback from the Head Selector. The Head Selector must provide reasonable feedback to that player in a timely manner.
h) If a player cannot attend trial session/s then they must notify the Indoor Coordinator so they can be considered at a later time. Please state reason as to why you are unable to attend.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SHIELD TEAM
i) The selectors may take into consideration the following elements for selection in an Indoor Shield Team.
i) Indoor skills; included but not limited to use of flat stick tackling, ability to trap without raising the ball, use of the boards, ability to eliminate outdoor skills not legal in indoor (jinks, hitting, slapping etc).
ii) Indoor game (tactics, rules) awareness and understanding.
iii) Indoor positional qualities and skills.
iv) Relevant fitness components; included but not limited to aerobic endurance, anaerobic capacity, strength, power, speed, agility.
v) Coachability: how good the player is at taking onboard coach feedback and incorporating it into their game.
vii) Specialist skills; including but not limited to indoor board use and short corner skills.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR TEAMS OTHER THAN SHIELD
j) Selectors may take into consideration all of the elements above AND the following
i) Team ability
ii) Team balance
iii) Positions previously played
ELEMENTS THAT SELECTORS MUST NOT CONSIDER
k) Selectors must not take into consideration any of the following elements:
i) Outdoor team level. It is important for players and carers to understand that a player who has previously played Shield level outdoor may not have the same level of skill or knowledge regarding indoor and should not assume they will play indoor at Shield level, even if they have played outdoor at Shield, and even if they have played outdoor at Representative level.
ii) Previous Indoor Shield Team or Indoor state selection.
iii) Any opinions or suggestions from non-selectors for the relevant age group.
iv) Anything else that might lead to a perception of bias for the selection process.
v) Anything that might be considered unjust or unfair to the other trialing players.
ELIGIBILITY FOR SELECTORS
l) A person cannot be a selector if they are ‘related’ to a player or players that are trialing.
m) One of the selectors should be assigned the role as Head Selector.
n) The club should aspire to have selectors who have reasonable selecting experience and skill.
o) A person must not be a Selector if, in the opinion of the Junior Executive Committee, there may be the perception of bias towards a player or players.
5) Playing Out of Age Group
If a junior player, or their carer, would like to be considered to play out of their age group (“playing up”) for indoor the following process will be followed. Whilst not guaranteed playing out of age group is more likely to be approved for indoor than outdoor.
a) The junior player or carer must put their request in writing to the Junior Unit President at firstname.lastname@example.org prior to Indoor selections starting.
b) The Indoor Co-ordinator, Indoor Head Selector and the Junior President will form a panel to review the application.
c) The panel will consider the following elements to do with the player:
i) Previous indoor experience, including Shield and State selection
ii) Fitness – including aerobic capacity, strength, speed, anareobic capacity,
v) Indoor hockey skills
vii) Capacity to improve
viii) Playing form at training and games
ix) Composition of the relevant teams, including numbers, skill level and gender of the players and tactical and strategic considerations
d) In considering the factors of section, the panel may meet with the player’s carer’s and/or the player to dicsuss the situation.
e) A representative of the panel will notify, in person or by email, the player and the player’s carer as soon as practically possible once the decision has been made.
f) Once a decision has been made the panel is able to move the player back to their original age group in the future based on new information.
6) Non Waverley Players joining for Indoor season (includes Doubling Up policy)
As not all clubs enter teams into the Indoor competition, or their teams may be full it is common for players from other clubs to request to play with Waverley in an indoor team.
NON WAVERLEY PLAYERS PROCEDURE
a) The junior player or carer from another club must put their request to play for a Waverley Indoor team in writing to the Junior Unit President at email@example.com.
b) The Indoor Co-ordinator will review Waverley registrations to establish if there are any spaces available for a player from another club to join a Waverley indoor team. Indoor teams where there will be 4 field players should contain a maximum of 8 players per team (including Goal Keeper) and teams where there will be 5 field players should contain a maximum of 10 players per team (including Goal Keeper).
i) Where spaces are available the player will be able to join a Waverley indoor team (noting Hockey Victoria transfer processes may be required).
ii) Where spaces are not available the player will be unable to join a Waverley indoor team.
c) The Indoor Co-ordinator or Junior President will notify, in person or by email, the player and the player’s carer as soon as practically possible once the decision has been made.
PERMANENT DOUBLING UP PROCEDURE
a) Assuming Hockey Victoria Indoor rules allow a player to be selected into two teams this procedure will be utilised as required. If Hockey Victoria does not allow players to double up on a permanent basis then this procedure will be void.
b) The junior player or carer must put their request to be selected into two Waverley Indoor teams in writing to the Junior Unit President at firstname.lastname@example.org.
c) The Indoor Co-ordinator will review Waverley registrations to establish if there are any spaces available for a player to be selected into two Waverley indoor teams. Indoor teams where there will be 4 field players should contain a maximum of 8 players per team (including Goal Keeper) and teams where there will be 5 field players should contain a maximum of 10 players per team (including Goal Keeper). All requests for non Waverley players (ie players from other clubs) should be satisfied prior to allowing a player to double up, including goal keepers.
i) Where spaces are available the player will be able to trial to be selected into two Waverley indoor teams. (The selection procedure applies).
ii) Where spaces are not available the player will be unable to join multiple Waverley indoor teams.
d) The Indoor Co-ordinator or Junior President will notify, in person or by email, the player and the player’s carer as soon as practically possible once the decision has been made.
