Match Report: Men’s Premier League v Doncaster

By June 6, 2014Club, Mens

Waverley Premier League Men faced last year’s Grand Finalists Doncaster Hockey Club on Tuesday night at the State Netball Hockey Centre. Both teams coming off tough weekend games you would have expected the level of play to be slow. This was not the case with Doncaster throwing everything that had at the Panthers and the ball going from end to end at a frantic pace. Due to some slack marking Doncaster went into the break with a one nil lead and all the momentum.

At half time Coach Adrian Kucyk asked his chargers for patience with the ball and to keep running.

5 minutes into the 2nd Half Doncaster scored their 2nd goal to take a 2 nil lead. Although now chasing a two goal deficit the Panthers remained calm with experience players Matt Freeman and Jarrod Glasscock directing play from the back. The Panthers were able to strike back with the ever reliable Lachie Steinfort converting from a penalty corner. With the momentum now shifting Waverley’s way minutes later David Jensen squared the game 2 all with a diving goal.

With the weekend’s game taking its toll on both teams Waverley looked to have more run in their legs. Strong midfield play by Lewis Mathews provided the Panthers forwards with numerous opportunities to score. The reward finally came with Lachie Steinfort converting from a penalty corner for the 2nd time in the game.

Striker Nick Steffens turned the defence inside out to put the game out of reach of Doncaster with 5 minutes to play scoring an amazing field goal from a tight angle. The game ended 4 – 2 in Waverley’s favour continuing its push for a top 4 position.

The Panther now have a weekend off and take on Essendon away in its next match.
