MPL: Goals galore in first home match

By | Mens, News | No Comments

The Men’s Premier League team took to the Hedley Hull Field against Yarra in their first home game of the year.  The club welcomed Yarra Valley led by ex-Waverley Premier League Premiership coach Zac Hawes in their first year in Victoria’s most elite competition after an extended period of absence.

From the first whistle Waverley took control of the match with wave after wave of attack seeing the Panthers create numerous goal scoring opportunities.  All the build up work was rewarded with scoreboard impact seeing the boys take a strong 4-0 lead at half time.

The second half was met with a change in the weather and a change in rhythm the game.  Yarra troubled Waverley and managed to find the back of the net catching the Waverley defence on the hop.  As the rain poured down and the game paused for all of 2 mins as the heavens opened, it was enough for boys to recompose themselves and re-establish their ascendency on the game.

Waverley finished off the game finding the net 2 more times and running out eventual winners 6-1,  a convincing first home game result.

Goals: L Steinford, J Knee, N Steffens, S Munckton, D Steffens 2

Assisting New Regional and Overseas Players

By | Juniors, Mens, News, Womens | No Comments

From time to time some of our new players arriving from regional and overseas seek assistance for various reasons to help with relocation and living costs while playing their hockey at Waverley.

We regularly receive enquiries from overseas and country or interstate players to come play at our club. These young men and women generally weigh up the reputation of the club in how it is coached and able to offer guidance/assistance to make their stay both rewarding and enjoyable when considering where to play. PL Men vs Powerhouse – Match Review

By | Mens, News | No Comments

Within the first minute of the game Powerhouse got off to the ideal start netting a goal shocking the Panthers.  Without Captain James Knee who missed the game through injury the older brigade in Corey Joseph and Tim Wischusen stepped up and provided much needed leadership to refocus the Panthers.

The Panthers settled into the game with possession shared between the teams. Goal Keeper Tom Scott was a brick wall in goals repelling any ball that the skilful Powerhouse strikers sent his way.  Nick Steffens and David Jensen were causing headaches for the Powerhouse defence upfront with their relentless pressure.  This pressure was rewarded with a penalty corner to the Panters late in the first half.  Through a scramble in the circle the ball found the stick of Joel Tansey who slotted his first Premier League allowing the Panthers to go into half time 1 all.
With renewed confidence the Panthers took the pitch for the second half knowing it was going to be a tough 35 minutes.  The half started evenly with both teams having chances but unable to convert. A lapse of concentration allowed a Powerhouse striker to skilfully run the ball along the baseline off loading  the ball to a teammate who pushed it passed an out stretched Scott.
Waverley gifted Powerhouse their third goal turning the ball over directly infront of goal where the Powerhouse forward pounced on the opportunity putting the ball in the back of the net. Acting captain Lachlan Steinfort started to make an impact into the game with some surging runs down the right side of the pitch.
Sam Poppenbeck converted a penalty corner with 15 mins to play taking the score to 3 – 2. As the Panther kept pushing for the equaliser a turn over in the middle of the pitch allowed Powerhouse to earn a penalty corner. The well executed penalty corner gave Powerhouse some breathing room scoring their fourth goal. The experienced Powerhouse side was able to hold out and take the game 4 – 2.  The Panthers take a lot of confidence from this game again matching it with one of the best in the league. Another tough assignment against Greensborough away awaits the Panthers next weekend.

Vale Grahame Green

By | Mens, News | No Comments

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Grahame Green. Grahame has been a long-time supporter of hockey in general being a player and committee member at Hawthorn Hockey Club in his younger days. After having a family, many of the Green’s played at Waverley and Grahame, along with his wife Josi, was a regular feature over many, many years supporting his kids and all other Waverley players. This included the 2015 season where Grahame was able to enjoy Waverley’s success as his son, Ant, lead Waverley’s Premier League Reserves team to a premiership and then backed it up against Grahame’s old team Hawthorn in the Over 35 team on a cold Monday night.

We pass on our deepest sympathy to Josi, Ant, Michael, Anna and Andrew and the wider Green family.
