Life Members

The following members have been awarded life membership for their contribution to the club.  We thank them and hope we can carry on their legacy and hard work to continue a strong club tradition.

Life membership at Waverley is categorised into 2 categories, those who have gone above and beyond during their time volunteering for the club.  The other category is based on representing the club on the international stage with National Representation.

Congratulations to all those who have achieved life membership to the Waverley Hockey Club. Without the generous effort from these people the club would not be as successful or prominent as it is today:

Volunteer Life Members

Les Large

Bob Trewin

Life member since 1968 (Deceased)

Playing Career summary

  • Played for the club 1959 to 1982
  • Estimated games for Waverley HC : approx. 500 games

Positions held at Waverley HC

  • Founding member of the Club in 1958
  • Council Liaison on Club Executive for many years, a role he
maintained throughout his years with the Club. In the early days
this involved the basic task of finding somewhere to play. The first
ground was in Sixth Ave, Burwood along with stints at Burton St,
Syndal PS, Syndal Tech, Larpent St, Jingella and Gladeswood Drive
before getting a permanent ground at Electra Av and soon after a
second ground that became affectionately known as ‘The Beach’.
  • A driving force in the development of junior hockey at the club,
with the formation of the U13 team in the third year of the club in
1961. This role in the junior arena culminated in Bob being
acknowledged and awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the
    Victorian Junior Hockey Association.
  •  Not wanting to rest on his laurels at the conclusion of his playing
days, Bob threw himself into administration of the club with stints
of Club President from 1983 to 1988, State League 1 Manager
throughout the early 80s and regularly turning out to umpire. It was
through his years as President that Bob along with the late Peter
Badger made the greatest physical contribution to the club. Bob’s
ability to lobby council was a driving force behind the arrival of the
turf ground in 1987 and the magnificent clubrooms several years
    later.
  •  Of equal importance to the clubs physical development was Bob’s
support and promotion of the amalgamation of the Men’s and local
Women’s club. The combined club has developed into a marvellous
    family and community asset.
  • The greatest measure of Bob’s contribution to the local sporting
community is the naming of the clubrooms the ‘Bob Trewin
Pavilion’. This was the first time the City of Monash has bestowed
such a personal honour on a member of the community.

chosen to represent Australia. Also, the successes of Waverley’s top
teams in receiving promotions to higher grades and winning State
    League championships.

Best memory

The years 1970-78 when, as Club President, I had the pleasure of
leading the “perfect Committee” which worked very hard and in
perfect harmony, using their individual skills to improve the Club’s
performance and amenities and achieve so much success in such a short period of time.

  • Played at Waverley for approx. 12 years until injuries saw him often
unable to play so he took up umpiring

Positions held at Waverley HC

  • Founder of Waverley Hockey Club, multiple committee roles over
    many years
  • Passionate Umpire, as soon as VAHA introduced a Player/Umpire
scheme he got involved, earnt A grade badge in 1949
  • Achieved Victorian State Badge for many years and was awarded
the Australian II badge for service to hockey
  • Life Member of V.H.U.A. (Victorian Hockey Umpires Association)
  • Life Membership to the V.J.H.A. (Victorian Junior Hockey Association)

Personal Highlights

  • In 1958 with Burwood and Mount Waverley expanding rapidly. Five
senior players from Elsternwick Club realised they were travelling
miles to play – as were my brother and I. A team was entered in the
VAHA competition. The VAHA made us enter C Grade – yet our
team comprise top senior players. Of course lots of Premierships as
we worked our way up the grades ! The work-load was unreal.
Marking the ground, getting the nets and putting them up and all
the ‘paper’ work. I was Secretary for a while – and years on
    Committee.
  • I was fortunate to be umpiring when Victoria was top in umpiring.
The Umpires held regular meetings run by the Victorian Hockey
Umpires Association. It was here that I got my love of being on
Committee. I was Secretary for many years, on the Appointments
Committee and the Examination Committee. (We had an Olympic
Umpire, five International Umpires and ten (?) Australian Badge.
Today we have just two Australian Badge. The V.H.U.A. collapsed in
1996. I was awarded Life Membership to the V.H.U.A.
  • In 1985 I began an interest in the umpiring side of Junior Hockey. In
1987 five of us Senior Umpires formed the Junior Umpire
Development Committee (JUDC). We introduced a badge scheme
and also awarded Junior Umpire shirts. The response from Junior
players to achieve their Junior A has been a great joy. The JUDC was
ended by Hockey Victoria in 2007. I was awarded Life Membership
    to the V.J.H.A.

Best memory
