Open BSE 2024 Premiers
It’s another Premiership for Waverley, with the reigning Midweek Open B Grade South East team securing the pennant on Monday night. It was a battle to find out who the real panthers are, playing Mentone at Monash University.
In what was the most competitive Monday night game of the year, it was nil all at half time. One spectator suggested that Mentone had had the run of play, creating more opportunities but Waverley was also looking dangerous. The second half saw some more tight play and it became a night for the goalkeepers, with both teams being denied shot after shot. The deadlock was finally broken, when another goal keeper-turned full-back, Ben Hocking, slotted a spotless short corner variation. This fired up Mentone, putting Waverley under sustained pressure towards the final minutes, including a disallowed goal for Mentone. It all ended with an after the siren short corner to Mentone, with the shot away and deflected through Joffa’s legs, barely missing the net.
Congratulations to all involved in the team, particularly Rod Mackintosh and Drew Ashton, making this 9 out of 10 wins through various iterations of the Monday night competitions.
