Waverley young guns beat SUHC 3-2 at Moorabbin on the weekend.
The Panthers’ team included seven players 18 or younger while the vastly more experienced SUHC had as many New Zealand and Dutch imports.
Joel Tansey 16, Sam Poppenbeek 17, Casey Henderson 17, Brayden Lyon 17, Damon Steffens 18, Connor Matthews 18 and Luke Hall 18, make up a large section of the Panthers squad. The exciting improvement of these young players show why the Panthers are a growing force.
The speed and skill of leadership combination James Knee and Tim Wischusen created serious problems for the SUHC defence. Waverley took a 2-0 lead via a Damon Steffens penalty stroke and PC before SUHC replied before halftime. Waverley buried another midway through the second half through striker Nick Steffens to lead 3-1. SUHC scored their second soon after, but Waverley held on 3-2 victors.
Solid games from experienced players Tom Scott, Steve Jarvis, Matthugh Freeman and Matt Steffens repelled most SUHC attacks. It was a brilliant effort by the young squad and they look ahead this week to Doncaster at Hedley Hull Field on Saturday at 2pm followed by WPL at 3.30pm.
