Bert Batch Cup 2023

By May 30, 2023Club

Congratulations to our Men’s Premier League team bringing home the Bert Batch Cup in 2023. Waverley HC had not won the Cup since 2013 and we went in as favourites, unbeaten season to date, but you can never discount Camberwell HC who have performed so well over the Cup’s history.

A high-quality game of hockey was played by both sides, with a tight two quarters. Both teams had many chances in the circle and it felt like it could go either way. But strong team work across the field, hungry strikers and a fearless defence saw Waverley break through to win 3-0.

The Cup was presented by Steve Batch, representing the Batch family, and Lorraine Rowland, representing the late Carl Rowland who was fundamental to the Cup being established in 1996. Steve spoke of his father Bert’s legacy and encouraged all men present to look after their physical and mental health. And in particular, if over 40 years of age get their prostate checked.  Camberwell was gracious in defeat speaking of the great history and rivalry between the Clubs and how important the Bert Batch Cup is to players from both teams each year. The Cup was received by Waverley Captain’s Lachlan Steinfort & Damon Steffens. Lachlan also spoke of the great history of the Cup and the quality of the game.

The game may have been played at Camberwell, but the venue was awash with navy blue with players and supporters from current and past teams coming down to watch the win! Thank you to all those who joined us on the day to witness high quality hockey and to see the Cup return to Waverley.
